THE TAU CROSS & OUR JOURNEYS

Why do Secular Franciscans wear the Tau Cross?

Tau is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet and is thought to be the symbol with which Ezekiel marked those chosen by God (Ez 9:4).

Pope Innocent III opened the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 (which was very important to St. Francis) with a homily on this Scripture passage.

St. Francis of Assisi eventually signed his letters not with his name but with this symbol.

It represents a journey never completed this side of heaven.

The Tau reminds us of a key teaching of St. Francis...  “Let us begin again for up to now we have done little or nothing."  Amen!

The Tau Cross is the habit of a Secular Franciscan.

Our Journeys to the Secular Franciscans!

Connie Shanks, OFS

"I saw information about Franciscans on EWTN. The next day when I walked into church for Mass one of the Secular Franciscans asked me to consider the Secular Franciscan call. After much prayer, I felt God was for sure calling me!"

Patrick Smith, OFS

"I met several Secular Franciscans at the Poor Clare convent in Oakville, MO. I attended some meetings and began to feel that the Holy Spirit was calling me to this way of life."

Shawn Asmus, OFS

"I was searching for a framework, a structure, a group...something that would help draw me closer to Our Lord. I found a resource guide at our local Newman Center which listed many Catholic orders. Through discernment that followed, I found the Secular Franciscan Order."

Rick Neal, OFS

"In the early 1980s, I began to listen to the music of John Michael Talbot, especially his album Troubadour of the Great King.  This was an album about St. Francis.  I wanted to be a Franciscan but I didn't know how! Fast forward to 2014 when I married my wife, Kim. She was a Secular Franciscan and the rest is history."

Peggy Wissmueller, OFS

"Since childhood I always loved animals (even pet garter snakes) and nature.  I attended an event at Holy Trinity Church and was invited to inquire about the Secular Franciscans.  The Followers of Francis fraternity was very helpful in my journey!"

Stan Kiger, OFS

"I attended daily Mass in Santa Barbara, CA at the Mission of Santa Barbara and was invited by the celebrant to attend their evening session of the Secular Franciscans. That meeting sparked my to search for a fraternity in the St. Louis area."
